01 / What I do

I design products, then I build them.

A product designer with an artist’s eye. I’ve drawn and painted all my life, spent twenty years designing and building for the web, and the last few as a founding product designer.

01

Product design

From a rough idea to tested screens people understand first time.

UX · UI · Prototyping · Testing

02

Design systems

One source of truth, so design and code stop drifting apart.

Tokens · Components · Accessibility

03

Design engineering

I ship my own front-end code, reviewed by the engineers I work with, who own the back end. Nothing gets lost in handover.

React · React Native · Astro

04

Art direction

An artist’s eye for brand, illustration and visual tone, so your product looks like no one else’s.

Brand · Illustration · Visual direction

03 / How I work

Paper first. AI where it helps.

AI makes me faster, which keeps costs down. It doesn't make the decisions: what to build, and whether it's right, stay with me.

  1. 01

    Understand

Listen, sketch on paper, agree what success looks like.

  2. 02

    Design

Flows and frames in Figma, built on a system from day one.

  3. 03

    Build

I build the front end myself. AI speeds up the typing; the design decisions stay mine.

  4. 04

    Check and ship

Test on real devices, refine, release.

What I believe

  • One thing at a time

Every screen should ask for one decision. Clarity beats choice.

  • Smallest screen first

If it works on the smallest phone, it works everywhere.

  • Design in the material

I check ideas in real code and on real devices, not just in Figma.

  • Honest by default

No dark patterns, no streak guilt, no claims the data can’t support.

05 / Background

Art school first, then sixteen years leading web at a London charity, then startups. I’ve always been the designer who also builds.

I joined Alively in March 2025, when it was two non-technical founders with an idea, and turned it into flows and working prototypes they used to win clients and investors. Once a CTO joined, I worked with him daily, designing features and then building them: at first polishing the last 20% of the UI in code, later shipping whole features for him to review. I take the front end; engineers own the back end. I also worked with the CEO on the marketing site, sales decks and a forthcoming book. I’m now stepping back to a behind-the-scenes role there, which frees me to join a new team while staying connected to a product I helped build.
